THE SHORT ANSWERNewVan.co verdict
A long-wheelbase medium panel van is the strongest starting point for many carpet fitters and mixed-flooring installers. A load-through bulkhead can accommodate long, narrow items without making every journey in a large van, but it does not replace full-width load length. Choose a large van only when regular roll sizes, stock volume or a two-person operation genuinely justify it.
What matters most
- Measure the longest regular carpet or flooring load in its transported form.
- Separate normal full-width floor length from any narrow load-through measurement.
- Plan restraint, roll supports, tools and offcut storage before selecting the derivative.
- Include lining, racking, adhesives, passengers and daily stock in the payload calculation.
Start with the longest awkward load
Write down the longest carpet roll, gripper, profiles and flooring packs carried in a normal month—not only the easiest daily job. Record the diameter and quantity as well as length. A narrow load-through hatch may suit rolled carpet or trim, but wide sheet flooring and several rolls can need unobstructed floor space.
Published dimensions are not interchangeable. Normal cargo length, maximum load-through length, width between the wheel arches and rear-door aperture answer different questions. Take the actual measurements to the exact body length and bulkhead configuration before ordering.
Why a long-wheelbase medium van is the usual starting point
A medium van is easier to park at domestic jobs than a full-size vehicle and can still provide useful length. Renault currently lists 2,937mm of normal cargo length for Trafic L2 and up to 4,150mm to the footwell with its load-through bulkhead. Those figures illustrate why the load-through design can be valuable, but only the narrow portion of the load can use it.
Ford offers Transit Custom in L1 and L2 configurations and describes load volumes from 5.8m³ to 6.8m³ for the low-roof panel vans. Use those numbers to shortlist, then compare the latest dimension sheet for the exact derivative. A shorter van can work for local fitting from pre-cut material; a large van may earn its cost for regular commercial rolls or substantial stock.
Design the load bay around clean, secure work
Plan supported roll storage so material cannot move, crush tools or obstruct an exit. Keep blades, adhesives and small tools in dedicated secured storage, and leave a practical area for clean flooring and underlay. Washable lining helps with dust and adhesive spills, while extra locks and an alarm may be worth specifying for tools and stock.
Roof carrying is not a casual overflow solution. GOV.UK guidance says loads must be secure and advises clamping or using cargo ratchet straps on a roof rack. Confirm the rack and roof limits, account for loading at height and keep within the vehicle's height and weight limits. Internal carriage is usually preferable when it protects valuable material from weather and theft.
Payload still matters
Carpet can be bulky without being the heaviest part of the day, but boxes of flooring, preparation equipment, adhesives, lining and racking add up. Include the driver, any fitter's mate, fuel where relevant and every permanent accessory. Check gross vehicle and axle limits on the finished vehicle rather than relying on a range-wide maximum payload.
If the calculation is close, weigh the van in representative working condition. Extra body length does not automatically mean extra payload, and higher trim or powertrain choices can change the available figure.
Choose for the jobs you want to win
A solo domestic fitter may value easy parking and a load-through medium van. A business fitting broadloom carpet in commercial premises may need full-width internal length, more stock space or a larger body. Mixed hard-flooring work shifts the priority toward payload and organised box storage. Test access at the rear and side doors with the planned racking in place.
Buying outright or with hire purchase can suit a permanent fit-out because the business can keep the van after the payments finish, sign-write it and avoid lease mileage and hand-back condition limits. Obtain lender and insurer approval for alterations while finance is active.

What size van does a carpet fitter need?
A long-wheelbase medium van is a sensible starting point for many fitters, but the longest roll, width, quantity, load-through design and parking needs decide the answer. Measure the regular load before choosing.
Will a carpet roll fit through a van bulkhead?
Some vans offer a narrow load-through opening for long items, but aperture shape and maximum length vary. Confirm the roll diameter and the exact derivative's opening rather than relying on the model name.
Do flooring installers need a large van?
Not always. A medium van may suit domestic carpet and mixed flooring work; regular commercial rolls, large stock volumes or substantial equipment can justify a full-size van.
Can carpet rolls go on a van roof rack?
Only on suitable equipment, within the vehicle and rack limits, with an effective restraint system and safe loading method. Weather, theft and working at height often make secure internal carriage preferable.
What should I tell Damian before he sources a van?
Give the longest and widest loads, normal roll and box quantities, tools, number of people, annual mileage, parking constraints and budget. That turns a broad model shortlist into a useful derivative brief.
